Dropping salted peanuts in a bottle of ice-cold Coke is one of the slowly disappearing traditions of the Southern United States that never quite made it to other parts of the world.
It’s a puzzling combination for the uninitiated. Will this result in soggy peanuts and flat soda? Or have we been missing out on a salty-sweet-crunchy-fizzy sensory experience that consuming these things separately will not deliver?

Inspired? Here are some tips for trying this yourself:
- For best results, use soda with real sugar (avoid diet drinks and high-fructose corn syrup), preferably in a glass bottle.
- Take a few sips of soda to make room for the peanuts.
- Pour a small pack of salted peanuts inside the bottle and let them settle at the bottom of the glass.
- Drink the soda first and eat the peanuts last.
- The salty-sweet foam created by adding the peanuts is the best part.
