For the second year in a row, Don Papa Rum is inviting Filipino artists to reimagine and reinterpret its award-winning label and design its secondary packaging.
The winner of this year’s Don Papa Rum Art Competition will receive an all expenses paid one-month Artistic Ambassadorship Sojourn in Florence, Italy, complete with round-trip airfare tickets, allowance, and accommodations, plus entrance passes to top museums in Florence. The winning design will also appear on limited edition Don Papa Rum canisters to be distributed locally and internationally.
Last year, Riel Hilario of The Drawing Room Gallery was named the first ever winner of the Don Papa Rum Art Competition with his entry The Spiritual Landscape of Papa Isio. The winning piece was inspired by Alfonso Ossorio’s The Angry Christ as interpreted from his dream of Papa Isio. Hilario won a month-long all expenses paid artist’s residency in Paris, France and a year’s supply of Don Papa Rum. The gallery who represented him was also included in the Paris trip.
For this year’s competition, the challenge is to “reimagine an artwork that encapsulates an original interpretation of the magical realist world of Sugarlandia based on the island of Negros, home to the country’s finest sugar canes that give Don Papa Rum its signature flavor; Papa Isio, who inspired the revolutionary brand; and everyone’s premium rum brand that elevates the amber liquid into a celebrated luxury drink.”
Monica Llamas-Garcia, Don Papa Rum’s co-founder and head of brand and communications, says that the competition aims to cultivate and honor Filipinos’ creativity and passion for the arts. “We are looking forward to witness how Filipino artists will reflect and embody Don Papa Rum’s passion for quality, heritage, and authenticity through their artworks.”
The competition is open to all Filipino artists, 21 years and above, who have participated in an art exhibit at least once (as an individual or with a group) and/or represented by an art gallery in the Philippines. Entries can be in the form of painting, drawing, photography, print making, and typography. The top 10 entries will be exhibited at the 2017 Art Fair Philippines.
Participants may register here. The deadline for registration is September 30, 2016.
