Just in time for the Christmas celebrations, the team behind popular spots Dr. Wine and Buccaneers Rum & Kitchen is launching a new Mexican restobar called Mamacita in the heart of BGC. Located on Forbes Town Road, just a short walk from Burgos Circle and mere seconds away from Dr. Wine BGC, Mamacita is set to offer an authentic taste of Mexico right in this bustling neighborhood.

Currently in its soft opening and catering to the public from 5pm onwards, Mamacita isn’t your average restobar; it stands out by focusing on authentic Mexican cuisine and a wide array of agave spirits. With an impressive selection of 176 different tequilas and mezcals (and counting, with an aim for 200!), this spot promises to deliver a genuine Mexican experience. “We want to bring the essence of Mexico into this small part of town,” shares Ulysse Jouanneaud, one of Mamacita’s owners and the founder and captain of Buccaneers Rum and Kitchen in Poblacion.

Chef Charles Montañez, who has a history of running successful restaurants in Manila and started at Grupo Alegria Inc., will head the kitchen, ensuring that each dish reflects traditional Mexican flavors.

The expansive 150-seat venue spans two floors, with al fresco seating, bars, ample space for group dining, and a private room that accommodates up to 12 guests. The inspiration behind Mamacita goes back a few years. “I have wanted to create a Mexican bar since my first visit to Mexico in 2017. I loved the food and the vibrant atmosphere,” explains Ulysse. “But when I opened Buccaneers, I realized Poblacion was better suited for a rum bar like a pirate ship,” he adds. “Here in BGC, it feels right for a Mexican restaurant with a lively dining experience. The variety in Mexican dishes is perfect for this area.”

As for the clientele, Mamacita aims to attract a diverse crowd. While it caters to a slightly upscale market, the vibe will be more laid-back and classy, differentiating itself from the more party-oriented spots in town.

Collaboration is key to Mamacita’s success. The synergy between partners Ulysse, Dr. Wine Group’s Vincent Landais, who is also a designer, and Simon Côté, founder and managing partner of craft spirits distributor High Proof, is essential. “Vincent excels in design, something I know little about. Simon and I bring our expertise in food and beverage, and together, we create something special,” Ulysse states.
Guests can expect standout dishes like their signature guacamole, perfected through extensive recipe testing, and homemade tacos crafted from fresh corn tortillas. “Almost everything here is made from scratch, including the chips,” he emphasizes.

Mamacita’s opening aims to enhance the bar scene in Manila. “The F&B scene is slowly developing, and we need more quality establishments. I hope to contribute to that,” Ulysse shares. With a unique offering that stands out from other Mexican restaurants in the area, Mamacita is poised to become a destination for locals and visitors.
While the soft opening is already underway, the official grand opening is planned for the first week of January, right after the holiday rush. So, keep an eye out for the grand reveal of Mamacita.
