After 12 years nestled behind a discreet doorway on Wyndham Street, Stockton, one of Hong Kong’s original hidden bars, is shutting down. A pioneer in the city’s speakeasy culture, Stockton’s legacy is rooted in the Prohibition era’s secret societies and clandestine bars. Located in Central, it’s the kind of place you find by looking for the familiar glow of a lone lightbulb at the end of a dark alley—an invitation only to those in the know.

Over the years, their innovative menu has changed multiple times, coinciding with shifts in the head barman. Most of their drinks drew inspiration from writers, icons, and countercultural defiers of their time, or served as an ode to the evolution of mankind and the cultural significance of alcohol. Stockton has been a refuge for barflies seeking secret adventures, whisky enthusiasts hunting for rare finds, and cigar lovers craving a moment of quiet luxury. Not just a drink spot, it’s played host to live music nights, guest bartender events, and all those small moments that made it more than just a bar.

Twelve years is a remarkable achievement in Hong Kong’s ever-changing F&B scene. Staying open for that long and consistently welcoming guests is no small feat, especially as new bars emerge and trends shift, often leaving established favorites behind. Their farewell announcement on May 17 promised, “While this chapter is coming to a close, it’s far from the end of the story — we hope to pop up again in a new location in the future, with the same spirit and soul you’ve come to know and love.” Fans of Stockton can hold onto that hope, waiting for that next chapter.
The last night is set for May 29. Before they close the curtains, they’re offering a 30% discount to everyone who stops by—an easy way to toast to their legendary 12-year run. Stop in, raise a glass, and give Stockton a well-deserved farewell.
Stockton is located at Wyndham Mansion, 30-32 Wyndham Street, Central. Catch their last run from 5pm to 4am, May 29. Follow them on @stocktonhk for updates.
